Big
Red Fred is a 1 year old
purebred Bloodhound. This huge, wiggly and wonderful boy joined our rescue
when his former family "downsized." Fred's date of
birth is 10/3/07, so he still has some maturing to do, both physically
*and* mentally. At already more than 100 lbs, he can be a force to be
reckoned with!
Fred is great with other large dogs, though he would easily be too much
for tiny breeds or cats. As Bloodhounds typically are, Fred can be very
stubborn and sometimes has "selective hearing"... if he's having fun or on
the scent-trail of something in the yard, he is suddenly deaf! Only when
he's ready to "hear" you will he decide to pay attention, and even then,
it's often on his terms. Fred is very food-motivated though, so we are
training and working with him with food-treats and lots of praise.
Fred is housetrained and is very much
an indoor dog. He wants to be with his
people
and
he will whine or fuss if he's not. Squeaky toys are fun and are
immediately chewed apart, to "kill" the squeaker inside. This guy is a big
ol' goofball and in traditional Bloodhound style, he can drool and sling
mud and dirt like a champion! (Neatnicks need not apply for Fred, please!)
We will only adopt Fred to a home with giant-breed experience...
meaning dogs at or over 80 lbs. He's not going to be someone's very
"first" dog or first "big" dog. Ideally,
his
future home will have had a Bloodhound in the past, or have one (or more)
right now. Please research this breed online to learn more about
Bloodhounds before contacting us, if you've never owned one. What some
folks consider to be "endearing" behavior can be considered "disgusting"
by others! Fred can be a handful at times, but the rewards are as big as
his monstrous paws! He is a giant loverboy who
loves to lean on his friends, run and play and sling drool (otherwise
known as "slingers"), and then crash on his bed (or the couch) for a long
nap. If this sounds appealing and amusing to you and you meet this
criteria, please email us to learn more about adopting this exceptional
hound!
Kansas City metro area only; fenced yard required.
